The Ruddy Daggerwing (Marpesia petreus) is a large butterfly, with the orange upperside marked with three thin black lines. The hindwing has long, black dagger-like tails. The underside is brown and black, often appearing like a dead leaf.
It ranges from southern Florida and south to Central America, Mexico and the West Indies. Sometimes can be seen in South Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
